Description
Baroque Architecture. The Via dei Crociferi in Catania is a monumental roadway built in the 18th century. It begins in Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi and is accessed by passing under the arch of St. Benedict.
The street, surrounded by churches, monasteries and a few civil dwellings, is an example of the unity of Baroque architecture. In the short space of about 200 meters there are four churches. The first one is the church of St. Benedict connected to the Benedictine nuns' convent by the arch of the same name that crosses the street and connects the Badia Grande to the Badia Piccola. It is accessed by a flight of steps and is surrounded by a wrought iron gate. Continuing on, you come to the church of San Francesco Borgia, which is accessed by two steps. The two churches are separated by a small street that leads to Palazzo Asmundo Francica-Nava, jutting out onto Piazza Asmundo. Then there is the Jesuit college, the old seat of the Art Institute, with a beautiful cloister inside with porticoes on columns and arcades.
Opposite the college is the church of San Giuliano, considered one of the most beautiful examples of baroque in Catania. The building, attributed to the architect Giovan Battista Vaccarini, has a convex façade and clean and elegant lines. Continuing and crossing via Antonino di San Giuliano, you can admire the convent of the Crociferi and then the church of San Camillo. At the end of the street is located Villa Cerami, which is the seat of the Faculty of Law of the University of Catania.

What that sky, the shadows, there's a distinctly moody and spooky vibe going on here. Well done! l/f
