Parlatory of the Monastery of San Benedetto.
One of the locations of the film Storie di una capinera by Franco Zeffirelli.
The monastery of San Benedetto is a monastery of Catania, annexed to the homonymous church, one of the most characteristic, placed at the beginning of the baroque and eighteenth-century via dei Crociferi, which starts right in this place under the arch of San Benedetto, between the districts Terme della Rotonda and Basilica Collegiata-San Giuliano.
It is divided into two buildings: the "Badia Grande" to the west and the "Badia Piccola" to the east, connected just by the arch, the latter built, according to the legend, in one night in 1704 in order to speed up the times of the Civic Senate, in a city that had to rise again after the ruinous earthquake of Val di Noto in 1693 that struck it. The monastery is governed by the Benedictine Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament of Perpetual Adoration.
The building has existed on this site since 1355 and, after the Val di Noto earthquake of 1693, was rebuilt in the current late Baroque style.
