Description
The bark of a millennial tree. The chestnut tree of a hundred horses.
A legendary tree on the slopes of the volcano Etna, the Chestnut of the Hundred Horses is one of the oldest and largest in Europe. The exact age of the Chestnut Tree of the Hundred Horses has been the subject of many studies: one of the most authoritative voices was that of the Turin botanist Bruno Peyronel, who in 1982 attributed to the tree an age between 2000 and 4000 years. The chestnut tree takes its name from a legend according to which a queen, with a hundred knights and ladies in tow, was caught by a storm during a hunting trip. Not being able to return found shelter under the giant chestnut tree, so large that it was able to accommodate her and all the numerous retinue.
